Workshop Overview

Nature as Mentor. Design as Reflection.

In an age of digital tools and synthetic solutions, this workshop is a quiet yet compelling return to the original design teacher: nature.

“Design by Nature”, led by Ms. Aditi Deshpande, is not a mere visual study of leaves and shells. It is a multi-layered exploration of how natural forms, systems, and phenomena can inform, shape, and guide the design of meaningful products. From the geometry of a pinecone to the structural logic of a bird’s wing, this workshop invites students to observe, analyse, and reimagine design through the lens of biomimicry and natural order.

Led by Aditi Deshpande

Architect, researcher, and Co-founder of INCLUDESIGN Studio, Aditi Deshpande is best known for her work at the intersection of neurodiversity, sustainability, and inclusive design. With a PhD in Product Design and more than 15 years of academic and industry experience, she has lectured across India’s top design institutes and has been a jury member for CII Design Excellence Awards and Toycathon, Govt. of India. Her ability to integrate storytelling, material exploration, and deep empathy into her teaching makes her one of the most thoughtful voices in contemporary design education.

What’s It All About?

Nature, as Maggie Macnab so aptly put it, is always just outside our door—an endless source of inspiration that designers often overlook. This six-session workshop introduces students to natural form studies as a foundational process for ideation.

The workshop is built around a two-tiered methodology:

  • Visual Analysis – where students closely examine the visible design elements found in nature—such as shape, symmetry, pattern, texture, form, rhythm, and colour.
  • Principle-Based Exploration – where the emphasis shifts to the intelligent systems and behaviours in nature: self-assembly, harmony and hierarchy, biomimicry, aerodynamics, bioluminescence, structural resilience, and transformation of scale.

Rather than simply imitating natural objects, students are encouraged to decode the logic embedded in these forms—to understand how and why nature solves problems in the way it does. These insights are then channelled into the design of a usable product—one that reflects the organic intelligence of its source.

The process involves:

  • Structured research and selection of a natural form
  • Concept sketches and analytical diagrams
  • Poster presentations showcasing findings and ideas
  • Hands-on model making using accessible materials
  • Final product concept and design articulation

By the end of the workshop, students will have not only created a design solution rooted in nature, but also developed a critical design thinking framework that is both intuitive and systematic.

Why You Should Apply

  • Engage with a theme that merges aesthetic intuition and scientific inquiry
  • Learn a structured process of moving from natural analysis to product creation
  • Understand how biological intelligence can lead to more sustainable, context-aware designs
  • Work under the mentorship of an accomplished and nationally respected designer
  • Contribute to a shared exhibition of concept posters and models across campuses
  • Receive a Certificate of Participation endorsed by Cindrebay

How Selection Works

Each campus will nominate its participants—students from the B.Des and M.Des Interior Design programs—based on faculty recommendation. A maximum of 30 students will be chosen to join this online design journey.

Materials Required

Basic model-making tools, A3 cartridge sheets, colour pencils, markers, foam board, coloured clay, and other prototyping supplies (a full list will be shared with selected students).
